The FilmArray Instrument is an automated in vitro diagnostic (IVD) device designed to work with specific reagent pouches to detect multiple nucleic acid targets contained in clinical specimens. The instrument interacts with the reagent pouch to both purify nucleic acids and amplify targeted nucleic acid sequences using nested multiplex PCR in a closed system. The resulting PCR products are evaluated using DNA melting analysis. The FilmArray Software automatically interprets the results and provides an easy-to-understand test report.
The FilmArray System is composed of the FilmArray Instrument and a laptop computer loaded with FilmArray Software. The FilmArray Software controls the function of the instrument and collects, analyzes, and stores data generated by the instrument.

The FilmArray pouch stores all the necessary reagents for sample preparation, reverse transcription-PCR, PCR, and detection in a freeze-dried format. Just inject hydration solution and an unprocessed sample. The FilmArray takes care of the rest.
First, the FilmArray extracts and purifies all nucleic acids from the unprocessed sample. Next, the FimArray performs a nested multiplex PCR. During the first stage, the system performs a single, large volume, multiplexed reaction. Finally, individual, singleplex second-stage PCR reactions detect the products from the first-stage PCR.
Using endpoint melting curve data, the FilmArray software automatically generates a result for each target.
